This unique route offers you a kaleidoscope of India. Start your journey in Bengal’s metropolis Kolkata and continue on India’s most famous Toy Train to Darjeeling in the Himalayas. Discover the holy city of Varanasi on the Ganges, the breathtaking Taj Mahal and Rajasthan’s fairytale palaces. In Ranthambore, you are on the trail of India’s tigers. And finally, the mega-city of Mumbai. The form of travel is also exceptional: the luxurious Deccan Odyssey has been honoured several times as Asia’s best train. We now offer this Indian fairytale on rails exclusively as a German-speaking charter for you. Start your Indian adventure with a pre-trip to Delhi. End your journey in Hampi, India’s Rome, or on Goa’s dream beaches.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Kolkata is (not) on the Ganges …Today you will explore Bengal’s exciting metropolis, a city with countless facets between colourful chaos and deep spiritual beauty. Enjoy the blaze of colour at the flower market with a view of Calcutta’s landmark, the steel Howrah Bridge. The huge Victoria Memorial made of white marble is the pride of the city, which was the capital of British India until 1911. In the traditional pottery district of Kumartuli, Hindu images of gods such as Durga, Kali and Ganesha are made for various festivities. Experience the silhouette of the metropolis from a completely different perspective: during a boat trip on the Hugli, an estuary in the western Ganges delta.
- On the Darjeeling Railway to the HimalayasIn the morning, you will take a short flight from Kolkata to Bagdogra in the northern part of the state of West Bengal. Then overland journey to Kurseong. This is the start of a unique experience: the journey on India’s famous Toy Train up to Darjeeling in the Himalayas. You travel around 30 km on the line built by the British between 1879 and 1881, which overcomes a difference in altitude of over 2,000 metres over a total length of 86 km and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gentle hills covered in red blooming rhododendrons, white magnolias and bright green tea gardens nestle against snow-capped mountain giants. 554 bridges and a single short tunnel on the entire route! For the next two nights, you will stay in a comfortable hotel with enchanting flair in Darjeeling.
- India’s blue luxury trainFrom Darjeeling you travel back down to Siliguri railway station, where you see the blue dream train Deccan Odyssey for the first time. In the late afternoon, the crew welcomes you on board your rolling home for the next seven nights.

Taj Mahal – Love turned to stone
When the entrance gates open and a snow-white monument of infinite dimensions looms on the horizon, it is a moment you will never forget. The majestic Taj Mahal is rightly one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Mughal ruler Shah Jahan had the building constructed entirely from white marble in memory of his deceased favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal. Precious inlays of sparkling semi-precious stones are reflected in deep blue pools. Afterwards, admire the Red Fort, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Fairytale Udaipur
Palaces are reflected in small lakes against the backdrop of the Araveli Mountains. Udaipur is India’s most romantic city. First, visit the huge palace complex directly on Lake Pichola. The crystal collection is both unique and curious: have you ever seen armchairs, tables and beds made of crystal glass? From boats, you can enjoy the dreamlike scenery on Lake Pichola. A detour takes you to the non-profit project Dastkar, which was founded more than 20 years ago and pursues two main objectives: to preserve traditional craftsmanship and at the same time generate an income for women in rural areas. In the evening, your special train leaves Udaipur and soon afterwards Rajasthan.
High tea in the maharajah’s palace
Today you reach the university town of Vadodara. Not far away are the largely unexcavated remains of the ancient capital of Gujarat, Champaner (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The city walls enclose mosques and palaces from the time before the Mughal emperors and combine Islamic and Hindu style elements. A feast for all the senses: in the Laxmi Vilas Palace, where the princely family still resides today, you can enjoy dancing and music with delicacies from princely Indian cuisine. In the afternoon, marvellous paintings and sculptures await you in the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum. Back on board the Deccan Odyssey, the journey south into the state of Maharashtra begins.
