Malaga
Discover Malaga, where history, culture, beaches and sunshine come together to create a true paradise.
Malaga may not be as popular as other Spanish cities, but a short visit to the birthplace of Pablo Picasso is enough to capture the heart of any visitor. With a mix of ancient history and modern culture, almost 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and several kilometres of beach, it’s pretty easy to see why Malaga has been dubbed a ‘paradise city’.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Hike on El Caminito del ReyEl Caminito del Rey starts an hour’s drive from the city of Málaga and runs from north to south. The hike leads through gorges, canyons and past a beautiful suspension bridge. The entire route is 8 kilometres long and takes between 3 and 4 hours. Adventurers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Andalusian landscape.
- Mosque-Cathedral of CórdobaThe Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, a World Heritage Site since 1984, is a building of outstanding importance in the Islamic West and one of the most astonishing structures in the world. It reflects the complete development of the Umayyad style in Spain as well as the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles in Christian architecture. The cult history of the site dates back to antiquity, when the Basilica of San Vicente was built under Visigothic rule. This basilica was divided between Christians and Muslims for a time before it was bought in its entirety by Abderraman I, who destroyed it to build the first Alhama Mosque. The Great Mosque consists of two distinct parts: the courtyard or Sahn with its porch and minaret (now under the Renaissance tower) and the prayer hall or Haram. The interior is characterised by a harmony of two-coloured columns and arcades that create a remarkable chromatic effect. The building is divided into five sections, each corresponding to a different extension made over time.
- Visit the old town of MalagaThe old town of Malaga, also known as the Centro Historico, is a historical and cultural treasure in the heart of the Andalusian city. With roots dating back to Moorish times in the 8th century, it offers a fascinating mix of Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Visitors can explore the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress dating back to the 11th century, and Malaga Cathedral, a Renaissance masterpiece. The narrow streets and lively squares create a unique atmosphere, while tapas bars and restaurants serve local cuisine. Calle Larios, a pedestrianised shopping street, adds a modern touch to the historic quarter. The old town is also an ideal starting point for discovering other attractions such as the Roman Theatre and the Castillo de Gibralfaro. All in all, it is an unmissable destination that represents the essence of Malaga’s history and culture.
