The Must-sees of the trip
- Archaeological site of EphesusEphesus, a former Greek colony, is one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in the eastern Mediterranean. The beautifully excavated ruins transport visitors back in time and reveal the splendour of a bygone era. The historical significance of the site extends from Classical Greece to the Roman Empire, when it was the most important trading centre in the Mediterranean. Cobbled streets wind past squares, baths and monumental ruins, creating a captivating journey through centuries of history. Ideally located just an hour’s drive from Izmir, Ephesus is a perfect destination for a day trip.
- Archaeological & Ethnographic MuseumThe Archaeological Museum in Izmir displays a diverse collection of objects from the Bronze Age, Greek and Roman periods. The exhibitions include a variety of artefacts, including busts, statues, tools and kitchen utensils. The Ethnographic Museum, on the other hand, focuses on Turkish history since the Seljuk period and displays a range of artefacts such as clothing and pottery. Together, these museums offer a comprehensive exploration of the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
- KadifekaleOn top of Mount Pagos in the heart of Izmir, Kadifekale offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Aegean Sea. Kadifekale is also known as the “Velvet Castle” and has a rich history dating back to various eras, including the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Visitors can explore the archaeological remains while enjoying breathtaking views of Izmir and the coastline below. At sunset, the call to prayer resounds throughout the city and the soul of Izmir echoes it back.
