The Must-sees of the trip
- Upstream on the Amazon with Zodiac landingsThe Amazon, or “Rio Mar” as the locals call it, is a global symbol of the need to protect our natural world and at the same time a river full of wonders and records. It becomes the stage for poignant natural spectacles, which you experience respectfully and accompanied by experts with your small, manoeuvrable expedition ship and its Zodiacs, depending on the weather and current conditions.
- Rio NegroOn the Rio Negro, you will witness the legendary “Encontro das Aguas”, the “Meeting of the Waters”. This is the name given to the spectacular confluence of the dark Rio Negro and the light-coloured, clay-brown Rio Solimoes, as the Amazon is known at this point. In this unique natural spectacle, the two rivers do not mix immediately, but flow side by side for kilometres. From the deck and from the circulation at the bow, you will observe that the protected riverside landscapes of the Rio Negro vary depending on the water level. Your experts on board will be able to tell you exciting stories about the variety of plants and animals that favour the riverbanks.
- ManausAccompanied by the sounds of the jungle, you reach Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. In the metropolis on the Rio Negro, it becomes clear how closely nature and culture are intertwined on the banks of the river. The colours of the jungle and the megacity seem to want to outdo each other – and yet together they form a unique symbiosis. The rubber boom once helped Manaus to fabulous wealth, as evidenced by the magnificent Teatro Amazonas with marble from Carrara and crystal chandeliers from Murano. Colonial past and global present meet in the jungle metropolis, where modern glass façades alternate with classicist and art nouveau buildings. Be inspired by the city’s history and its contrasts.

Expedition cruise with style

Hanseatic Inspiration
Amazon
The Hanseatic Inspiration is a small expedition ship from 2019 that was designed for cruises in the polar regions. The ship also sails to the Amazon, the Chilean fjords and the Azores. The HANSEATIC nature is its sister ship.
Guajara
The start of your intensive Amazon adventure is marked by Guajara, a small settlement where families live from livestock farming. You may spot mighty water buffaloes standing far out in the river, grazing on aquatic plants.
If you’re lucky, you’ll see the fabulous pink river dolphins from the Zodiac – the young animals are initially grey and only change colour after two years.

Alter do Chao
Enjoy a relaxing time in the village of Alter do Chao on the Rio Tapajos, where a surprisingly Caribbean-style beach invites you to swim in the warm water. A landscape that appears or disappears depending on the water level. Along the banks of the river, the Brazilian jungle beckons for wonderful nature explorations with your experts.

Canacari
You can track down a completely different treasure of nature at Canacari: In the Zodiac, you will travel through grassy meadows in search of the largest water lily in the world, the Victoria amazonica – its fabulous leaf diameter is up to 3 metres. But birdwatchers will also get their money’s worth when they spot diving great-billed terns, great and little egrets and various species of birds of prey.
Time and again you will reach hidden paradises and marvel at exotic plants and animals. Your experiences are deepened by the expertise of the experts. They will shed light with you on the extent to which economic interests are taking possession of this treasure trove of nature and jeopardising it, but also on how initiatives around the world are committed to saving and reforesting it.
