The Must-sees of the trip
- Village Pomme CannelleThe Village Pomme Cannelle invites you to discover the culture and history of Martinique. Located in Le Prêcheur, a small fishing village in the north of Martinique, Village Pomme Cannelle blends into a vast, lush tropical garden. Just 10 minutes from Saint-Pierre, a city of art and history as well as a former capital, Village Pomme Cannelle reflects the authenticity and depth of Martinique. Ideally located, the village offers panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the mythical Montagne Pelée, which has shaped the history of the island of flowers.
- Fonds-Saint DenisDepature with a rental car to the small town of Fonds-Saint Denis, not far from Saint-Pierre. The canal was designed at the end of the 18th century by Mr Beauregard. The aim was to irrigate the plain by bringing water from the forest to the Caribbean coast, which receives little water during Lent. At the time, hundreds of slaves carried the heavy stones that make up the building, and today the site is commonly known as the Canal des Esclaves. This walk (7km – 3h), which starts at the Maison Rousse, follows the route of the canal. In some places, you can even walk directly on the low wall between the water and the void. The view over the valley through which the Rivière du Carbet flows is breathtaking! Beautiful cheese trees and majestic tropical trees line the path, and you can often spot a few freshwater crabs. Once you’ve reached “Bout du Canal”, turn around and head back along the same path in the opposite direction. Don’t be afraid of heights on this walk! After the walk you can visit the observatory at Morne des Cadets for a magnificent panorama of the mountainous landscape of the region.
- Ajoupa-BouillonThe Gorges de la Falaise are the main tourist attraction around Ajoupa Bouillon. The route follows the bed of a torrent, the Rivière Falaise, which flows down the slopes of Montagne Pelée. The water finds its way between impressive rock faces that form a veritable canyon. The visit, which is accompanied by a guide, is reserved for those who are a bit sporty, with slides and jumps in the water on the menu. The cool water baths in the basins are very pleasant on hot days, and swimming costumes are a must, but beware: the tour is often temporarily interrupted if it rains heavily. It is therefore essential to book a guide in advance.

Nature, Peace and Comfort in the North of Martinique

Hotel Village Pomme Cannelle
Morne Folie, 97250 Le Prêcheur, Martinique
The Village Pomme Cannelle is a three-star hotel located in Le Prêcheur, in the north of Martinique, offering a peaceful setting between the Caribbean Sea and Mount Pelée. It offers spacious, fully-equipped accommodation, from studios to F3s, with terraces and panoramic views. The establishment has an infinity pool, jacuzzi, vegetable garden, fitness trail and organises sea excursions. Ideal for lovers of nature and tranquillity, it combines comfort, authenticity and immersion in a lush tropical environment.
Climbing Mount Pelée
If you’re visiting Martinique, a climb up Montagne Pelée is definitely the way to go. The volcano, 1395m high, is the highest point on the island. The starting point for the hike (6km and 4h30) is the Aileron car park. The perfectly signposted path winds its way through the ferns and the slope quickly becomes steep. The summit of l’Aileron (1107m) is reached after 1km of fairly difficult ascent. The path then forks to the right and follows the ridge slightly downhill before rising again to reach the Palmistes plateau at 1230m. This section of the climb is easier and shorter than the previous one.
You then reach the 2nd refuge. The descent into the crater is short but involves a very steep staircase that is a little vertiginous at first. Be careful, especially if the ground is wet. You then climb immediately and steeply towards the 1902 cone (1364m). From this first summit, the view to the north is remarkable. The rather chaotic path then descends towards the 3rd refuge before climbing towards the real summit, the 1395m high Chinois. The latter, made up of an imposing boulder, can easily accommodate two or three hikers to admire the superb view, weather permitting.

Visit to a rum distillery
Martinique is renowned for its agricultural rum. Visit distilleries such as Habitation Clément and Depaz, learn about the production process, taste different vintages and immerse yourself in Creole history.

Ti-punch and fierce avocado
For a typically Martinique experience, start with a Ti-punch, an emblematic cocktail made with white agricultural rum, cane sugar and lime. It is often served as an aperitif and perfectly reflects the island’s convivial spirit. Pair it with a féroce d’avocat, a spicy starter made with crushed avocado, flaked salt cod, cassava flour and chilli. This creamy, spicy mixture is a real local delight.
