Italy
Bella-Italia-Express Rail cruise through Italy with the legendary ETR 252 “Arlecchino” high-speed railcar.
The harlequins, as the elegant 252 series multiple units are known, were part of the modern image of Italian rapid transit in the 1960s. They not only thrilled the public at the Olympic Games in Rome, but have remained legendary to this day. Now there’s a restored, working original train set to take us on a dream journey across Italy, from Milan to Bari via Florence and back, with a stopover in Rome in the style of the 1960s.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Rail cruise with the Arlecchino.
Our rail cruise with the Arlecchino begins at Milano Rogoreto station at around 8.30 am, with luggage transported separately to the hotel in Florence. We take our seats in the generous 1st class upholstered armchairs, lean back and let ourselves be carried back to a time when it was still possible to travel really comfortably on the rails. The Arlecchino leaves Milan, passes through Brescia on its way to Verona, then crosses the Po plain to reach Bologna. From there, we take the Porretana mountain line, the first railway line that linked Bologna to Florence. The train first follows the valley of the River Reno upstream to Poretta Terme. The line then climbs up to 25 per mille and passes through countless tunnels before reaching Pracchia station at an altitude of 616 metres. There, the train disappears into the tunnel at the top of the Apennines, 2,727 metres long, before reaching Tuscany. - Dream journey to Bari
The route leads to Terontola via Pontassieve and Arezzo. Along the shores of Lake Trasemino, we ride towards Perugia, the capital of Umbria. At Foligno station, we change direction and start going uphill again. The train follows the Topino river until it passes under the Apennines again at Fossato, in the tunnel of the same name. Passing through Fabriano, we head for the Adriatic coast, which we reach at Falconara Marittima. The journey continues along the Adriatic Sea via Ancona – Pescara – Termoli – Foggia to the magnificent port city of Bari. - Leaving Rome, heading west
Via Civitavecchia, we travel to Montepescali, in the foothills of Tuscany. Passing through Livorno and Pisa with its leaning tower, as well as Viareggio, we reach La Spezia, at the entrance to Cinque Terre. We follow one of the most beautiful rail routes in Italy, along the Riviera di Levante and through the villages of Cinque Terre on the Ligurian Sea.
