Western Mediterranean
Travelling in the Mediterranean offers the opportunity to sample the local cuisine and explore fascinating places. These destinations combine beaches, cultural discoveries and unique experiences.
A cruise in the Mediterranean is not only a moment of relaxation, but also a door to other cultures, the discovery of gastronomic delicacies and the opportunity to embark on an adventure! One of the most beautiful destinations in the western Mediterranean is Spain, with the unmissable cities of Barcelona and Valencia. These stopovers are the perfect balance between delicious traditional dishes, beautiful beaches and surprising sights. Many MSC cruises head to the Mediterranean, a city that never ceases to surprise its visitors. From sampling culinary specialities found in and around La Boqueria market, to the beaches of Barceloneta and the architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudi – including Park Guell and La Sagrada Familia – you’ll be spoilt for choice!
The Must-sees of the trip
- BarcelonaThe coastal city of Barcelona, one of the Mediterranean’s liveliest cruise ports, is famous for its iconic architecture, colourful culture and world-famous restaurants and bars. Discover Antoni Gaudi’s remarkable Sagrada Familia church, the famous Las Ramblas boulevard, the medieval Barri Gotic neighbourhood and the Picasso Museum. But this beautiful Spanish city, which is a common stopover on MSC Mediterranean cruises, has much more to offer: from mysterious tapas bars to fabulous food markets and the largest football stadium in the world. Choose your favourite from a list of unforgettable MSC Cruises excursions, including: Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, the Montserrat massif and Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey or the Camp Nou stadium.
- MarseilleMany millennia of human and natural activity have made Marseille the city it is today. When you arrive at the harbour, you can see the curved, mountainous coastline that forms the gateway to the Mediterranean and makes Marseille a cultural hub. The terracotta roofs, turquoise sea, limestone cliffs and local street art create a unique landscape. Although Marseille is the second largest city in France, its inhabitants describe it as 111 villages. The best way to visit Marseille is with a local guide who can show you the city’s best spots. On excursions to Marseille, you can discover hidden treasures, such as the model ships hanging from the ceiling in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde. Marvel at Marseille Cathedral, which towers over the ocean. Stroll through the old port, admire the sea and linger on a café terrace. Explore the Palais Longchamp, which was built to commemorate the arrival of water in Marseille. Observe the limestone cliffs in the Calanques National Park.
- GenoaGenoa is a wonderfully eclectic and vibrant city, full of a somewhat rough-and-tumble style: perfect for an excursion. The city was nicknamed “La Superba” (the beautiful one) because in its heyday it was a true superpower in the Mediterranean. The city offers more mystery and intrigue than all other coastal towns put together. Use your holiday in Genoa to explore the old town, a dense and fascinating labyrinth of medieval alleyways with grand palaces built in the 16th and 17th centuries by wealthy Genoese merchant families and now converted into museums and art galleries. Look out for the Cathedral of St Lawrence, the Doge’s Palace and the Renaissance palaces in Via Garibaldi, where Genoa’s finest art collections, furniture and decorative pieces from the city’s glory days, when its ships sailed to all corners of the Mediterranean, are on display.

The future of ocean cruises
MSC World Europe

MSC World Europa has an innovative design; every detail has been thought through to offer you a completely new cruise experience. Her incredible futuristic silhouette sails across the water with ease and grace.
Civitavecchia
Discover the culture and colours of Civitavecchia, a port of call for MSC cruises in the Mediterranean. This Italian jewel offers a pleasant break from the big cities of Europe and beyond. Famous for the 16th century Michelangelo Fortress, the ancient Baths of Trajan and the marble Fountain of Vanvitelli, the harbour city is the ideal starting point for a visit to Rome, the majestic and romantic capital of Italy.
MSC Cruises’ excursions offer the opportunity to discover a variety of exciting things, including :
– The Colosseum
– The Trevi Fountain
– The Vatican
Messina
Messina is usually the first place you see when you come to Sicily for a holiday, and when you’re on board your MSC cruise ship, the city already offers a remarkable view, sprawling along the coast north of its characteristic scythe-shaped harbour in the Mediterranean.
During a shore excursion, you can discover Messina’s most important building, the cathedral. It is the symbol of a city that has managed to rise from the ashes like the Arabian phoenix after the last catastrophe. It is the reconstruction of an existing 12th-century cathedral requested by Roger II and is one of a series of remarkable Norman churches in Sicily, including the magnificent churches in Palermo and Cefalù. The campanile, adjacent to the cathedral or bell tower, is the largest astronomical clock in the world, and provides one of the most amazing spectacles every day when the noon bell rings and a bronze lion (the ancient symbol of Messina) roars over the city, which can be concerning if you’re not expecting it!
Valletta
The harbour of Valletta, the capital of the island of Malta, is a UNESCO-protected site and a must-see for any Mediterranean cruise. From your MSC ship, without having disembarked, you can admire the harbour, which was built in the second half of the 16th century by the Frenchman Jean de la Valette and shaped by the religious and military order of Saint John of Jerusalem. More than 300 monuments in just over half a square kilometre make this place one of the most important when it comes to the density of historical sites to visit during a cruise.
A trip to the island can start in the capital Valletta, which charms cruise passengers with its famous Maltese balconies that adorn the facades of the houses in the old town. The inhabitants of the island, which is surrounded by numerous churches, claim that there are as many churches as there are days in the year, but St John’s Cathedral is one of Malta’s biggest tourist attractions.
