But only few people know that there are also Christmas markets in famous Loire castles. And these are real insider tips. The crowning glory of this “Tour de France” is the fascinating “Fete des Lumieres” festival of lights in Lyon.

The Must-sees of the trip

  1. StrasbourgStrasbourg, also Strasbourg in French: this city is synonymous with half-timbered idylls, Gothic architecture, cosy wine taverns, lively student life and Europe. You can hear French and German or even Alsatian on the streets. From the hotel, we take the tram to the old town, where we visit the Christmas markets scattered throughout the city. There we will enjoy culinary delights, colourful lights, Christmas crafts and other typical market offerings. We will end the day in a cosy restaurant. Overnight stay in Strasbourg.
  2. Boat tripAfter breakfast, we will explore the old town and the “La Petite France” neighbourhood in daylight. Of course, a boat trip on the Ille is a must. After lunch, we will take our luggage and travel by TGV and TER to Blois in the Loir-et-Cher department. Overnight stay in Blois.
  3. Château Royal de BloisAfter fortifying ourselves with a tasty breakfast, we set off on a guided tour of the town and visit the Château Royal de Blois. This probably most famous Loire castle dates back to the 10th century and was extended step by step between the 13th and 17th century. It was one of the first castles to be extensively restored after the French Revolution.

Chambord hunting lodge

The third castle of the day will be Chambord, one of the most magnificent Loire castles. There we will experience a Christmas market on the Loire.

This is characterised by decorated Christmas trees, lights and open fires, candlelights and stylish decorations. Return journey by coach and overnight stay in Blois.

Clos Luce manor house and the Leonardo da Vinci Museum

After breakfast, we take the TER regional train from Blois to Amboise. The Clos Luce manor house and the Leonardo da Vinci Museum await us there. This was Da Vinci’s last place of work and also the place where he died. We then continue by coach to Chenonceau Castle, which was built on a bridge-like gallery over the River Cher. Right next to it is the castle grounds with a large garden. After the tour of the castle, we take the TER to Tours, where another traditional Christmas market awaits us.

OUIGO high-speed train

Our next stage takes us on the OUIGO high-speed train to Paris. There we change to a TGV to Lyon. On arrival, we take our luggage to the hotel. We then have some free time before heading to the Christmas market. There we will also experience the festival of lights, the “Fete des Lumieres”. Let us stroll through the city and enjoy the light installations on monuments, bridges and buildings. We experience countless colourful lights in the windows as well as dance performances and concerts in the streets. There are three main routes. And be careful – it could get quite late! Overnight stay in Lyon.
