Have you always wanted to stand in front of the highest mountain on earth, the 8848 m high Mount Everest? We make it possible for you without you having to be an extreme mountaineer, because on our trip we drive you directly to the first base camp on the Chinese side at around 5200 metres above sea level, from where you have a unique view of Mount Everest. Our journey starts in the Chinese capital Beijing and takes you in various stages to gradually acclimatise to the change in altitude, by train via the highest railway line in the world to Lhasa and on via Shigatse to Tingri and to the foot of Mount Everest.

The Must-sees of the trip
- Qinghai LakeTo warm up, we take the bus in the morning to Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China and one of the world’s largest salt lakes. It lies at an altitude of 3190 metres above sea level. After dinner, we transfer to Xining railway station. Our exciting train journey to Lhasa, almost 2000 kilometres away, starts here. For the journey over the highest railway route in the world, the Chinese state railway has built special new and comfortable train sets, which also have oxygen controls like in an aeroplane. The train offers comfortable sleeper compartments with four beds each. Here, we get comfortable for the exciting journey to the “Roof of the World”. Overnight stay in the sleeping car.
- Dangla Shan MountainsDuring the night, we travel across the Qai-dan Pendi plateau and through the Dangla Shan Mountains. We also spend the whole day on the train. Around midday we reach the highest point of the journey, the Tanggula Pass at 5070 metres, which is also the border to Tibet. The journey then takes us down into the Salween Valley, accompanied by mighty six- and seven-thousand metre peaks. Shortly before reaching its destination, the train crosses the Lhasa River on a large railway bridge. Arrival in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, at an altitude of 3650 metres. Breakfast and lunch in the dining car, dinner and overnight stay in Lhasa.
- The “Place of the Gods “We start the day with a guided tour of the “Place of the Gods”, which means Lhasa in Tibetan. We visit the Jokhang city temple, the Buddhist places of worship in Tibet and the world-famous Potala Palace, once the seat of the Dalai Lama. Dinner and overnight stay in Lhasa.

City of Shigatse
The morning is free for personal activities. In the afternoon, we experience the railway line from Lhasa to the city of Shigatse, 3836 metres above sea level, on a unique mountain journey. The railway is 251 km long and runs through 29 tunnels, through breathtaking gorges and over 116 bridges.
The train departs at 1.30 pm and the journey takes around 2.5 hours. Shigatse is around 600 years old and the second largest city in Tibet. Dinner and overnight stay in Shigatse.
The valley of the Bramaputra
From today on, we travel in a comfortable minibus through the valley of the Bramaputra through fascinating landscapes towards Tingri. Weather permitting, we will have our first glimpse of Mount Everest shortly before our destination. Tingri is already 4348 metres above sea level and we spend the night in a hotel where the rooms are equipped with oxygen. Dinner and overnight stay in Tingri.
Marvellous sunrise over the Himalayas
This morning, an adventurous bus ride awaits us from Tingri to the 5200 metre high Pangla Pass, where we can experience a magnificent sunrise over the Himalayas. The journey then takes us up numerous serpentines to Rongbuk Monastery at the foot of Mount Everest. The monastery is only a few kilometres away from Base Camp I. Built at an altitude of 4980 metres, Rongbuk is the highest monastery in the world. From here you have a marvellous view of the summit of the world’s highest mountain. You can take a stroll along the paths and enjoy the unique view of Mount Everest. In the afternoon, return to the hotel in Tingri by bus via the same route. Dinner and overnight stay.
