Cologne
Around 18 November, the gates of this year’s Cologne Christmas markets open, tempting visitors with delicacies such as mulled wine and waffles. Discover the many markets on a mulled wine walk through the cathedral city or find your favourite market here.
Cologne is one of the hotspots for street art in Germany. Several routes, guided tours and specialised galleries offer you an introduction to the scene. For example, you will find plenty to see in Ehrenfeld, the Belgian Quarter and the city centre.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Cologne Harbour Christmas MarketModern and in a picturesque setting directly on the Rhine, next to the Chocolate Museum, the modern harbour Christmas market presents itself with 70 stalls in snow-white pagoda tents that look like the sails of a ship. In addition to high-quality goods and arts and crafts, there are culinary delights from the region and all over the world, and hot mulled wine from the winemakers invites you to linger. A varied entertainment programme including shanties and pirates and the “Leuchtturm-Spelunke” underline the Christmas harbour atmosphere. As another highlight, a Ferris wheel with an impressive height of 48 metres will be integrated again this year – with an incomparable view over Cologne, the cathedral and the Rhine and, of course, the sparkling harbour Christmas market.
- St Nicholas’ VillageLocated on Rudolfplatz, between Neumarkt and the trendy Belgian Quarter, the magically decorated St Nicholas’ Village presents itself in front of the historic Hahnentorburg. Young and old can enjoy the atmospheric stage programme, hot drinks from the Nikolausstiefel cup and the Christmas magic between the cosy village alleyways.
- Market of AngelsOn Neumarkt, centrally located near the main shopping streets, the Market of Angels presents itself as an atmospheric Christmas world. Countless shining stars and fairy lights in the trees create a special atmosphere. Wide alleyways invite you to stroll and linger between the elaborately decorated houses, and illuminated mythical creatures on stilts and enchanting angels can be spotted every now and then.

Wolters Bimmelbahnen – Christmas Market Express
With the Chocolate, Zoo or Christmas Market Express!
Dear passengers, all aboard – it rumbles and jolts and has nostalgia value: but it is and remains a city tour. Or several – on different routes and also at Christmas time.
This is a touristic round trip on the long-established Bimmelbahn, which is an integral part of Cologne’s tourist facilities and takes you on a ride through the city centre – either to the Chocolate Museum or in the other direction to Cologne Zoo.
Cologne Christmas
The Christmas market on the Alter Markt is where the character Hötte-Lis worked in the 19th century. Accompany the Christmas market vendor on her way there and get to know the Advent saints, learn about the purpose of the pre-Christmas time and what Christmas has to do with swaying during this atmospheric tour.
Heinzel’s winter fairy tale
In the heart of Cologne’s Old Town, spread over the Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares, the cosy Heinzels Wintermärchen puts the legendary Cologne Heinzelmännchen on spotlight. In addition to various themed alleyways and handicraft artists from all over Europe, the spectacular ice skating rink on Heumarkt is a particular highlight of this Christmas market.
