Africa
A train journey through five countries on the African continent.
Climb aboard Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa train and set off on a truly epic and unforgettable train journey – almost 6,000 km through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania. You’ll discover natural wonders such as the Victoria Falls, with a stop at the spectacular Victoria Falls Bridge, travel through the unexplored wilderness of northern Zambia, over the breathtaking passes of the Rift Valley and to the tropical coast of East Africa. Enjoy exquisite menus, exceptional wines and the service of the staff on-board.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Cape Town – The most beautiful tip of the worldLanding in Cape Town, where your guide will meet you at the airport. You will be staying at the De-luxe Hotel, close to the famous Waterfront. Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon is still at your disposal to relax at the hotel or explore the city on your own. If the weather is permitting it, don’t miss a cable car ride up Table Mountain (own expense). Before dinner, you will meet your fellow travellers over a welcome drink. Welcome dinner at the hotel restaurant.
- Special train journey with Rovos RailA city tour will take you through the metropolis at the south-western tip of the African continent. In the early evening, your special train journey with Rovos Rail across half the African continent begins as platform 23 at Cape Town station announces: “All aboard please!” Make yourself comfortable in your compartmented suite as the train winds slowly through the graceful scenery of Cape Town. Or enjoy a fine South African wine in the lounge car with your fellow passengers before meeting up in the on-board restaurant for your welcome dinner.
- The city of diamondsAround midday, your special train will pull into the historic Kimberley station. This small town saw a veritable diamond rush in the end of the 19th century, which gave rise to the De Beers diamond empire, still run by the Oppenheimer family and once founded by Cecil Rhodes. Take a look at the famous Big Hole, once the world’s largest diamond mine, and visit the Kimberley’s lovingly restored original Belle Époque buildings. In the evening, your train will cross the Vaal River en route to the Highveld, some 1,500 meters above sea level.

Chisimba Falls
In the morning, your train arrives in Kasama, where an excursion takes you to the Chisimba Falls on the Luombe River. The railway line climbs steadily through baobab forests to the Zambian-Tanzanian border. Your journey continues over a breathtaking pass through one of the world’s most geologically interesting regions.
The Great Rift Valley, the Great African Rift, is an enormous land fault stretching from Jordan to the Red Sea and East Africa.
Chobe National Park
On a boat trip, you will witness the awakening of the wildlife in the game-rich Chobe National Park. After breakfast, enjoy the view from the lodge terrace before taking the bus back to Victoria Falls. If you have stayed overnight at the Victoria Falls Hotel, you will have the morning free. A panoramic helicopter flight over the impressive Victoria Falls is certainly a highlight (to be booked locally, even if you are staying overnight at the Safari Lodge). Accompanied with traditional Shangaan dances, your train will leave Victoria Falls station in the afternoon. The journey over the Victoria Falls Bridge, which links Zimbabwe and Zambia, is spectacular.
Dar Es Salaam
As your train nears the coast, the vegetation becomes increasingly dense, until it becomes tropical forest on the coastal plains. Around midday, your train pulls into Dar Es Salaam’s grand TaZaRa station, with its modern, Chinese feel, where you are greeted by a large, bustling city. It’s here that you say goodbye to Rovos Rail and the train crew you’ve enjoyed so much, before being taken to your luxury hotel. On the way to your hotel, you’ll discover the bustling centre of Dar Es Salaam, the second largest port city on the East African coast.
