Argentina – a land of contrasts. From Antarctica to the monumental Iguazú Falls, via Patagonia, the Pampas, the well-known wine regions of Mendoza and the lesser-known regions of Catamarca and Cafayate. Visit the still-authentic north-western region of the Aymará Indios, with the Seven and Fourteen Coloured Mountains in the province of Salta. Not to be missed: the beautiful capital Buenos Aires.

  1. Buenos Aires – Tango capital of the worldAlso known as the Paris of Latin America, this dynamic city has plenty to offer: La Boca with its La Bombonera football stadium and the multicoloured El Caminito district, the birthplace of tango; the Recoleta district with its beautiful cemetery, the final resting place of the famous Evita; the hip, chic and young Palermo district; the microcentre with its many parks, squares and palaces, including the Casa Rosada, the obelisk on the longest avenue in the world, Avenida 9 de Júlio, and the Teatro Colón, an architectural jewel.
  2. Ushuaia – Gateway to AntarcticaUshuaia, the city at the southernmost tip of Argentina, is the departure point for many cruises, especially to Antarctica, but not only. It is also the starting point for ruta 3, which joins up with the legendary ruta nacional 40, Argentina’s longest, at 5,300 km, stretching all the way to the Bolivian border.Ushuaia is also a paradise for hikers, with a large number of national and nature parks, such as Lapataia.
  3. Iguazú – IguaçuThe monumental falls on the border to Brazil are well worth a visit from both Argentina and Brazil. Plan to spend one or two nights there.

Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa

Cerro Alarkén 1, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego

Beware of the exterior of this hotel, a member of “The Leading Hotels of The World”. This hotel is situated on a plateau overlooking the bay and town of Ushuaia, with an exceptional view of the Beagle Strait and Chile just opposite. Rooms with a view of the Strait are obviously the preferred option. The interior of the hotel is very cosy, with a certain Zen atmosphere. The hotel has a very good restaurant, a large spa with outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking the city and the Strait, and a splendid nature reserve.

Discover Dante’s Inferno in a different, architectural way, on a guided tour with a short tango demonstration at the end.

Much less well known than Mendoza, Cafayate is located on ruta nacional 40, in the province of Salta. If you do the Tucumán – Tucumán or Salta – Salta loop via Tafí del Valle, Cachi, the Parque Nacional los Cardones and the Cuesta del Obispo, linger a night or two in one of Cafayate’s hotels, such as Patios de Cafayate or Grace Cafayate.

Argentina is inextricably linked with Patagonia, which it shares with its neighbour Chile. Patagonia is a patchwork of plains, lakes and some of the highest mountains in the world, part of the Andes. Patagonia is above all nature in all its forms. The best-known places not to be missed on a visit to Patagonia include the Perito Moreno interior glacier (apparently one of the only glaciers in the world to increase in volume), El Chaltén with its mythical Fitz Roy mountain and the Swiss-style town of Bariloche, among others.
