The island of Sal, 30 km long and 12 km wide, has an arid landscape contrasting with turquoise waters and golden beaches.

The island of Sal is 30 km long and 12 km wide, where arid, barren nature contrasts with turquoise waters and golden beaches. The island’s highest point, Monte Gordo, rises 406 metres above the sea, which explains why its first name was “Llana” which means flat in Spanish. Its current name comes from the intensive production of salt, where it is still possible to see the structures used for this exploration. Today, the island of Sal is the archipelago’s main tourist destination.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Santa MariaThe destination of the majority of visitors to Cape Verde, the island of Sal barely emerges from the water. Its few square kilometres of barren, arid land are bathed in brilliant light. Benefiting from the island’s strong tourist appeal, Santa Maria, its capital, quickly became the entry point to the archipelago and remains an almost unmissable location thanks to its international airport.
- Pedra de Lume saltworksThe Pedra de Lume saltworks, located in the crater of an ancient volcano, are the best example of this wonderful island, and well worth a visit. The only access is rather curious, as it is via a tunnel that seems to separate two different worlds.
- Private day cruise aboard a Cuba Libre sailing yachtSailing on the Cuba Libre is a sweet sensation. And it’s even sweeter on this private cruise, exclusive to you and your group. With an attentive crew, you’ll cruise around Santa Maria, with stops for swimming and snorkelling. Choose between a half or full day on board.

Kitesurfing
The island of Sal in Cape Verde lies off the west coast of Africa. A kitesurfing holiday in Cape Verde includes world-famous sites. What’s more, the island offers the perfect combination of sun, waves and wind. In fact, with its wind statistics, the variety of spots for beginners and advanced kiteboarders, the quality of its waves and its unique landscapes, Sal, in Cabo Verde is one of the ultimate destinations for kitesurfing. In this little goldmine for all water sports, the ocean offers a beautiful playground. An aquarium-style seabed for diving, and wind for kitesurfing, needless to say. But there are also consistent waves for surfing and lagoons for stand-up paddling.
The windy season lasts from October to June. A special highlight are the wave riders which are present from December to April, when Sal gets some excellent swells.
And whether you’re already a strapless expert, or want to learn to ride your first wave with a directional board, there are plenty of spots on the island to suit all levels of rider. And there’s even challenges for the most experienced riders.

Sal’s turtle nesting beach
Animal lovers beware: watching breeding turtles is a must-do activity in Sal. This evening excursion takes you to the island’s beaches where the loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. You’re as close to nature as you can get, as this experience meets the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). By choosing this experience, you can protect the places you love, care for the environment and support local communities in action.

Horseback riding in Sal
Sal’s spectacular sandy beaches and salt flats are ideal for horse riding. Take a ride through these beautiful landscapes on the back of your mount on this excursion. A variety of rides are available and there is even a tailor-made romantic package for beginners and advanced riders.
