Chania – Crete
Considered one of the most beautiful towns in Crete, Chania is a real gem and well worth a visit during your stay in Greece.

The former capital of Crete and now the island’s 2nd largest city, Chania (Hania in Greek; pronounced “Rania”) immediately attracts visitors with its colourful Venetian port, its eclectic architectural heritage and the wild charm of the narrow streets of its old town. An essential stop-off on a trip to Crete, this lively, historic city can be used as a base from which to explore the breathtaking scenery of western Crete. With mountains and olive groves as far as the eye can see, small villages and isolated monasteries, secret coves and dreamy beaches, this is one of the most enchanting invitations to travel to in the Mediterranean.
The Must-sees of the trip
- The Samaria Gorge
If you’re a fan of hiking and breathtaking scenery, you’re probably wondering what to do in Chania to take in the sights. Then the Samaria Gorge is for you. Located in the Samaria National Park, the gorges are hidden within the White Mountains. A veritable paradise for the local flora and fauna, they are open to the public from May to October. However, this hike requires a good physical condition. You can get there on your own. There are two routes: the long one, 18 km long, and the shorter one starting from Agia Rouméli. This village is only accessible by boat. If you want to keep things simple, there are a number of organisations offering an all-inclusive day trip, with an early morning bus departure (around 6am). - The old townWhen it comes to visiting Chania, the old town is a must. It is divided into 5 districts. Take the opportunity to wander through the maze of narrow streets lined with colourful houses, one prettier than the other one. The districts of Topanas, with its ramparts, and Evraiki, the old Jewish quarter, have been well restored and are full of charm. The Kasteli district has not had the same treatment, but is still very important historically: it was in one of its streets that the remains of the ancient city of Kydonla were unearthed.
- The covered market in ChaniaWhat can you do in Chania to discover traditional products such as olive oil and honey? Visit the covered market at the Halles, without a doubt. Cretan markets are rarely covered. This one, however, is a benchmark in Crete. This covered market is laid out in the shape of a cross and hosts around eighty stallholders every day. You can’t visit Chania without sampling Cretan cuisine! Take advantage of your visit to have lunch in one of the many restaurants. The dishes are tasty and authentic!

Old town of Chania: Take a walk and visit the craftsmen and tourist sites
Explore the old town of Chania, where the crafts of artisans echo through time. Guided by a local, wander through the colourful alleyways and discover history at its best, harmoniously blending the past and present.

Balos Lagoon
This is clearly one of the most beautiful places on any trip to Crete. It’s a very popular spot for a good reason.
The area is wild with mountains at the sea, islands creating a bay and a shallow lagoon to enjoy it all. The sand is white and pink, the water is turquoise, the cliffs are dark and (hopefully) the sky is blue… it’s a beautiful rainbow of colours!
The easiest option is to take the boat from Kissamos, which stops first at the island of Gramvousa and then takes you to the Lagoon. Alternatively, there is a 4X4 track that starts to the west of Kissamos. Or you can take organised tours from the towns.

The Maritime Museum
Housed in Fort Firkas, the Maritime Museum is liked by young and old. It retraces the naval history of Crete since the Bronze Age. There are a wide range of exhibits (videos, photos, objects). The cockpit of a Greek ship is reconstructed and numerous models bring the explanations to life.
