Cologne
Cologne, on the Rhine, combines tradition and modernity. Its old town offers pubs, boutiques, museums and monuments. Lively and cultural, it’s an ideal university town for a relaxed and rewarding break.
Cologne is a magnificent historic city on the Rhine in western Germany. It offers a fascinating mix of tradition and modernity, particularly in its old town on the west bank. Its narrow streets offer a wealth of things to see and do, from picturesque pubs and cosy boutiques to captivating museums and remarkable historic monuments. From lively bars to contemplative galleries and from shopping centres to independent boutiques, Cologne offers a host of simple or, on the contrary, totally extravagant pleasures. And with its status as a university town, a city of culture and liberals, it’s an ideal destination for a relaxing getaway.
The Must-sees of the city
- Agnesviertel: Cologne’s trendy and traditional old townIf strolling through Cologne’s old town is an interesting experience in itself, the Agnesviertel district is the icing on the cake. It manages to be both trendy and traditional, blending historic monuments with a bohemian atmosphere. Here you’ll find a host of hotels, bars, galleries, designer boutiques and independent booksellers alongside the city’s North Gate, Fort X and the remarkable Agneskirche. If you arrive at Ebertplatz underground station, you’ll go straight to the heart of the best of Cologne’s Veedel (traditional districts). Just a short walk away, you’ll find the Alte Feuerwache, which hosts political exhibitions and an exotic flea market (held every four weeks in summer). You can also visit the bars on Neusserstrasse or the art cinemas on Lübecker Strasse and Ebertplatz. Many of these places feature colourful classical buildings and cobbled streets, making the Old Town a picturesque place to explore.
- Cologne Cathedral: Meet the Three Wise Men
The Cologne Cathedral is Germany’s most visited monument, partly because of its popularity among Christian pilgrims. Since 1164, the site has housed the shrine of the Three Wise Men, who came from the East to offer gifts to the infant Jesus. This grandiose Gothic cathedral can become a little cramped when crowds flock to it, but it always evokes a sense of wonder, both inside and out. As well as the ancestral gold reliquary, there are magnificent 16th-century stained glass windows, 10th-century works of art and a 14th-century black marble altar. You can climb the cathedral’s south tower for a small fee, but the 509 steps to the top require good physical condition, comfortable shoes and about an hour’s effort! That said, the view is well worth the effort. Located right in the centre of the city, the Cathedral Quarter is the ideal place to stay. - A cruise on the Rhine: a different view of the historic centreAs a mighty river, the Rhine has been a vital part of Cologne for centuries. Although river trade is much less important today, boats are still an excellent way of admiring the historic heart of the city. The typical itinerary takes you south of the Hohenzollern Bridge, past Cologne Cathedral, the charming Old Town and the renovated former port district of Rheinauhafen, with its chic, modern buildings designed to look like old cranes. Finally, after around an hour’s peaceful cruising, you’ll reach the old fishing community of Rodenkirchen.

The Chocolate Museum: A tempting museum where you can sample your own confectionery
A day at Cologne’s Chocolate Museum (Imhoff-Schokoladenmuseum) isn’t exactly like a visit to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, but it comes close! Run in collaboration with Lindt & Sprüngli, this establishment is considered to be one of the best chocolate museums in the world and covers all aspects of this foodstuff, from the history of the bitter cocoa bean to the transformation process that produces delicious sweets.
You can even watch the process in action: the museum includes greenhouses where cocoa trees are grown and small versions of many of the machines used to transform their fruit into chocolate.

Enjoy a Kölsch and a Halve Hahn in the Altstadt
Cologne’s most popular local meal could not be more German: it consists of beer and bread. More specifically, it’s Kölsch – a locally brewed straw-yellow pilsner – and Halve Hahn, which, as its name (“half a rooster”) doesn’t suggest, consists of a rye roll and a large piece of Gouda cheese, usually accompanied by mustard and slices of onion.
The best place to try this simple but nourishing snack is in the Old Town (Altstadt). Here you’ll find many traditional Kneipen (pubs) and even some of the breweries behind the first pale lagers. German bars are renowned for their jovial, lively atmosphere, and the pubs in Cologne’s Altstadt are no exception.

How about making your own Eau de Cologne? Meet the specialists behind the famous Eau de Cologne
One of the things that makes Cologne so famous is, of course, the water that bears its name. This iconic fragrance was invented by Johann Maria Farina in the 18th century. If you’re feeling inventive, you’ll certainly appreciate the brand’s flagship shop, 4711. Every Thursday from 3pm, this historic perfumery organises a 1.5-hour seminar in which local experts show you how to mix the city’s scented water with other fragrances to create your own composition. These public classes are only available in German, but it is possible to sign up for a private session in English or French.
There is also a museum dedicated to the city’s perfume near the town hall (Rathaus), about 6 minutes’ walk from 4711. Here you can take a 45-minute tour of the oldest preserved perfume factory in the world.
