France: Railways on the Atlantic coast

This is the start of a series of train journeys along the Atlantic coast, with a focus on the Normandy region. Subsequent journeys will continue towards the south to discover other highlights of these coastal regions.

7 nights from
2,390 p.p.

Join us for a fascinating IGE trip through the north-west of France, with its picturesque railway lines and authentic museum trains, fascinating landscapes and attractive towns. In addition to exciting rail experiences, the highlights include the cities of Lille, Rouen, Le Havre and Caen, as well as the Atlantic Wall Museum.

  1. Steam train journey from Saint-Valery to Le Crotoy.
We take a beautiful steam train ride along the river mouth of the Somme with the Baie-de-Somme museum train to Saint-Valery. We visit the depot (subject to change) and spend some time in this beautiful port and tourist town with its narrow streets and medieval buildings.
  2. A nostalgic trip on a special train through the Eure valley to Breuilpont.
The long journey will be interspersed with breaks for rest and refreshment. Our nostalgic train runs on an old railway line from Orléans to Rouen. Since 1996, regular tourist rail traffic has been operated, mainly during the summer months, on this temporarily disused railway line.
  3. The touristic railway Etretat – Pays de Caux
The outward journey will work with rustic bike draisines, and the return with a railcar. We’ll spend the lunch break at the coast on the seaside in the holiday village of Etretat. We will also have a look at the famous Atlantic Gateway.

A charming and picturesque little fishing port. To the north of the bay, take the panoramic road towards Le Crotoy. You’ll be struck by its silhouette, made up of two red and white kestrels. In the 17th century, Le Crotoy sold the main fishing ports in the English Channel.

Today the activity takes place in the fallback area, with the bay serving as a starting point, but the resort has the charm of a small fishing port with some hidden bait used to fish in the crevasse. The fishermen’s cottages double up as holiday homes. The long sandy beach is the only southern beach in the north.

Le Havre also has a funicular railway, the “Funi” or Funiculaire du Havre. On the heights of the city, we will have a beautiful panoramic view of the city by the sea. We’ll travel on the regional train from Le Havre to Rouen.
