  1. Old Town of ChaniaChania, the “Venice of the East”, is characterised by a mixture of Venetian, Ottoman and neoclassical buildings and architecture. The streets are narrow, colourful and picturesque, past flowered balconies, traditional knife shops, Cretan boot shops, lively restaurants and cosy cafés. Don’t miss the beautiful promenade along the Venetian harbour, where you can see the Venetian lighthouse, one of Chania’s landmarks.
  2. Koules FortressThe Venetian fortress of Koules, also known as Castello a Mare (meaning “fortress by the sea”), is one of Heraklion’s most important landmarks and is located at the old harbour. This large, square structure was built in the 16th century to protect the city and was later armed with cannons. From the roof terrace you have a marvellous view of the sea and the city of Heraklion.
  3. Samaria GorgeUnless the temperatures don’t allow it, a hike through the Samaria Gorge is an extraordinary experience for experienced hikers. On 18 kilometres through the remarkable landscape, you will discover 450 plant species, cross wooden bridges and passages, some of which are only 3 metres wide but 300 to 700 metres high.

Rethymnon

When visiting the historic harbour town of Rethymnon in the north of the island, you can stroll through the small shops in the narrow streets, where you will find traditional Greek handicrafts and culinary specialities as well as a wide variety of souvenirs.

Make sure you get a seat in one of the restaurants in the harbour and enjoy freshly caught fish with a view of the Fortezza fortress from the Venetian era.

Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis is located in the regional district of Chania and was originally a fishing village. Today it is a tourist-oriented seaside resort with a beautiful beach. The beautiful Lake Kournas is very close by.

Elounda & Spinalonga Island

Elounda, with its luxurious villas and hotels, is the favourite retreat of the rich and famous. From Elounda, you can take a 25-minute boat trip to the island of Spinalonga, known for its well-preserved Venetian fortress, small pebble beaches and as one of the last leper colonies in Europe.
