The Must-sees of the trip
- Tokyo the megalopolis
Tokyo fascinates, Tokyo the city of superlatives, Tokyo the capital of the Empire of the Rising Sun. This city of 14 million inhabitants (the greater Tokyo area has a population of 41 million). Must-sees: the Senso-ji temple in Asakusa (the oldest temple in Tokyo), the Akihabara district for electronics aficionados, the Ginza district and Omotesan-do boulevard for luxury shopping, the Meiji temple in the large Yoyogi park, the Gotokuji temple with the famous Maneki-neko cat. - Kyoto – former capital of the EmpireThis city is known for its 1,600 temples and some 400 reliquaries, palaces and gardens, and is a real jewel. The most important places are: Kiyomizu-dera, Ginkaku-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Nijo-jo (Nijo Castle), the Gion district, some of whose streets have been off-limits to tourists since 1 April 2024, the Arashiyama district, Shijo shopping street with its covered Nishiki-market and its little gourmet alley Pontocho running parallel to the river Kamo, and the Fushimi-Inari taisha temple with its 1,000 red torii (gates).
- HiroshimaFamous for the nuclear bomb, this city still has a lot to offer: its ‘atomic dome’, its Peace Park and its museum (very interesting, but sensitive souls should refrain). Outside the city, you can visit the beautiful island of Miyajima, famous for its large red torii close to the shore, which dries up completely at low tide, and its magnificent temple and pagoda. The island is also ‘inhabited’ by a multitude of deer, which at the time were considered sacred.

An island of tranquillity in Kyoto
Dhawa Yura Kyoto – Banyan Group
84 Ohashicho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto 605-0009
Magnificent 4-star hotel belonging to the Banyan group. Depending on the season, the hotel offers very affordable rates for its standing, quality and services. The welcome is worthy of a 5*, the cleanliness is impeccable and the breakfast simply delicious. The hotel is just a short walk from the northern part of the Gion district, Pontocho alley and the many temples that line the eastern ‘façade’ of the city.
Manga
For manga aficionados, a visit to the Ghibli Museum on the outskirts of Tokyo is a must. Tickets go on sale on the 10th of each month for the following month. Beware, tickets sell very quickly. Alternatively, visit the Harajuku district with its crazy Takeshita-dori street, where you’ll even find the mipig-Café, a café where you can cuddle with little pigs.
Matcha tea in a small bamboo forest
Located in Kamakura, near Tokyo, the Hokokuji temple allows you to enjoy a matcha tea in the enchanting setting of a small bamboo forest within its precincts.
Overnight stay at a Shingon Buddhist temple in Koyasan
Don’t miss the chance to spend a night with Buddhist monks from the Shingon sect. There’s a wide choice of temples to stay in, but allow for a certain budget, depending on availability. Overnight accommodation and half-board are included in the price. In general, there is no private bathroom, but you can wash in the temple’s public bath, which is only accessible to “residents”. Please note: the bath and the temple door close at 21:00 as a general rule. The meals served are exclusively Buddhist vegetarian, a real treat.
In Koyasan you should visit the main Kongobuji temple, the Danjogaran with its great hall and round pagoda (Kompon Daito). But the most interesting is the huge Okuno-in cemetery, where the founder of Koyasan, Kukai, respectively Kobo Daishi, is buried in a mausoleum. It is believed that Kukai is not dead, but in eternal meditation. To this end, the monks bring him food and drink twice a day, according to a well-defined ritual.
