Montpellier
With its medieval streets, flower-filled pedestrian squares, shady terraces, generous sunshine and dynamic nightlife, it’s hardly surprising that Montpellier is a magnet for weekend strollers, student revellers and fans of the new-found quality of life that the Metropole seems to exemplify!
Welcome to Montpellier, the city surrounded by nature! The cosmopolitan capital of Languedoc is glamorous and popular, a thousand years old and modern, peaceful and hyperactive… International, cultural and festive all year round, Montpellier lives, moves and grows! Blue skies and soft light invite you to stroll along its terraces, through its narrow streets, along the banks of the River Lez, or pedal to the sea… Breathe in the fresh air, Montpellier is an outdoor city!
The Must-sees of the city
- The Écusson district (Montpellier’s historic city centre)The best way to explore Montpellier’s medieval streets, in the Écusson district, is to leave your map in your pocket and simply wander around this pretty pedestrian zone. Among the most remarkable streets are Rue de l’Ancien Courrier, a narrow arched street paved with polished white marble and lined with chic boutiques, and the beautiful Rue des Trésoriers de la Bourse.
- The Jardin des Plantes
France’s oldest botanical garden, created in 1593 by Pierre Richer de Belleval, is well worth a visit. The poet Paul Valéry is said to have composed a few verses while chewing on rose petals. Discover the tropical greenhouses, as well as a 200-year-old Silver Apricot (or Ginkgo) tree and a 16th or 17th century Phillyrea latifolia that served as a letterbox for lovers, who hid messages in the crevices of its gnarled trunk. From Peyrou, head down Boulevard Henri IV and you’ll come across the Jardin des Plantes. - The Arc de TriompheThe 15-metre-high Arc de Triomphe, built in 1691 in honour of Louis XIV, forms the gateway to Montpellier’s old town and stands at the end of the Rue Foch, facing the Promenade du Peyrou. Just next door is the imposing Palais de Justice. Rue Foch is impressive for its fine 19th-century buildings.

Nightlife in Montpellier
Montpellier is a student city. It’s the ideal place for people who like to go out, whether it’s after work or late into the night every night of the week.

A boat trip
If you’re in Montpellier for a few days’ holiday, don’t forget to make the most of its coastline and take a lovely boat trip.
Although it’s impossible to hire a boat in Montpellier, there are plenty of harbours like Palavas-les-Flots, Carnon and La Grande Motte just a few kilometres away. So you can enjoy the Mediterranean for an afternoon, on your own or with a skipper.

Go hiking in the Pic Saint-Loup
The Pic Saint-Loup is a steep mountain located some twenty kilometres north of Montpellier. The 658-metre peak is set in a landscape of limestone cliffs and vineyards, the hallmark of the South of France. The summit is visible from a large part of the Hérault department, and will inspire hikers and climbers. On foot, you can climb the Pic Saint-Loup from the south, on a six-kilometre path from Cazevieille (see route). The crest path from Saint-Mathieu de Tréviers (see route) is also very pleasant, as it takes you past the Chateau de Montferrand.
