Discover the hidden beauties of the Western Balkans on picturesque railway lines with the IGE.
Travelling with the IGE on beautiful, often unknown routes in the Western Balkans. We travel through Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, cross the Dinaric Mountains and also stop off in the metropolises of Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Split and Rijeka. Our guests from Germany meet in Munich, Salzburg or Vienna.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Railway museums and technical museums in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo and PivkaThe Railway Museum of Slovenian Railways is a unique space where you can learn about the workings of the railway. Here you can see a collection of old steam locomotives, including rare examples. It is complemented by an extensive collection of equipment, tools and other technical heritage from the railway sector.
- Sightseeing tour of ZagrebThe tram takes us through the streets of the city, where we learn all kinds of interesting facts about the local means of transport and the fascinating history of Zagreb. In the Railway Museum and the Technical Museum, we gain a comprehensive insight into Croatia’s transport history with the help of numerous exhibits.
- Visit of the Plitvice Lakes National ParkWe visit the famous Plitvice Lakes, the oldest national park in the Republic of Croatia. The 16 cascading lakes, which are connected by waterfalls, extend into a limestone gorge. Hiking trails run along the shore and partly on footbridges through the lakes. Around lunchtime, after a short bus transfer, we reach Vrhovine, the departure station for our train journey via Ostarije and Ogulin to Rijeka. Parts of this line were put into operation by the Hungarian State Railway between 1914 and 1918. We have now arrived at the northern Adriatic in the Kvarner Bay, the harbour town of Rijeka is considered the gateway to the islands of Croatia. Numerous buildings from the Habsburg era line the large promenade.
