Railway pleasure trip through the Franconian wine region
Experience Lower Franconia on picturesque train journeys: discover historic steam trains, breathtaking landscapes and the special charm of the region.
Our insider trip with historic and modern trains along scenic railway lines in Lower Franconia. Enjoy the Franconian charm, unique architecture, mighty castles, picturesque vineyards along the Main and the densely wooded north in the Rhön low mountain range. You can also experience a ride on the Mainschleifenbahn railway and a steam train ride on the Rhön-Zügle.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Local railway steam on the Rhön-Zügle – Fladungen open-air museum – history in MellrichstadtWe start the day with a train journey from Würzburg via Schweinfurt to Mellrichstadt. There we change to the “Rhön-Zügle” and steam up to Fladungen. At the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen, we experience the “old” Lower Franconia and learn how people once lived, farmed and celebrated. Then return to Mellrichstadt. A guided tour of one of the oldest cultural sites in Franconia with a history stretching back over 1200 years. The journey continues on the Erfurt railway via Ebenhausen through the charming valley of the Franconian Saale to Gemünden and finally on another regular train to Würzburg.
- Rail bus ride on the MainschleifenbahnThe “Säuferzügle” on the former Seligenstadt – Volkach branch line has been in operation as a tourist railway since September 2003. Wonderful views of the landscape around the Volkach Mainschleife with its vineyards open up before we reach the current terminus station at Astheim. The Mainschleifenbahn is one of the last surviving branch lines in Lower Franconia from the time of the royal Bavarian state railway. After a lunch break, the Mainschleifenbahn takes you back to the Escherndorf-Vogelsburg stop and, after a break (refreshments available, wonderful panoramic view), on to Seligenstadt. This is followed by a regular train journey via Rottendorf to the wine village of Iphofen. There we taste several quality wines and are served a Franconian winemaker snack platter consisting of regional sausage and cheese specialities.
- Tram ride in WürzburgOn our last day of travelling, we will get to know part of the 21 km long Würzburg tram network on a round trip with the “Schoppenexpress”. Enjoy the last few hours in the baroque city before we say goodbye to beautiful Lower Franconia with its charming landscapes and diverse railways at around 11.30 am.

Amorbach adventure railway station – West Franconia round trip
We start the day with a journey on the regional express train to the cultural city of Aschaffenburg. After changing trains, we continue by regional railway along the Main and via Miltenberg to Amorbach. First we have time for lunch, then we experience a guided tour through the railway museum “Erlebnisbahnhof Amorbach” (Railway Friends Westfrankenbahn e. V.).
There we see a historical collection, the original signal box and the signal garden with exhibition carriages. Return journey with regular trains via Miltenberg and Lauda to Würzburg.

Gotthard model railway Reichelshofen
After breakfast, we return to the Westfrankenbahn railway network and visit some of Franconia’s most important sights. We take the regional trains via Ochsenfurt and Steinach to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Medieval architecture, cobbled paths and streets, half-timbered houses and an impressive town wall with its gatehouses and towers await us. A cosy stopover for your own tour, an opportunity to stop for refreshments or to linger high above the Tauber Valley is planned. A charter bus picks us up in Rothenburg and takes us on to Reichelshofen. There you will find a large model railway layout with a detailed presentation of the approximately 30 km long northern ascent of the Swiss Gotthard Railway to the summit tunnel. Selected models of Swiss vehicles run on 930 metres of track along the realistically recreated towns, landscapes, tunnels, bridges and viaducts.

Museum BW Würzburg
The tour guide will welcome the group at the hotel in Würzburg at 2.00 pm. In the afternoon, we will head to the Würzburg museum depot, where we will experience first-hand the association’s work on historic museum vehicles.
