Sal Cape Verde
Off the coast of Senegal, the Cape Verde archipelago, where the famous singer Cesaria Evora grew up, is made up of some fifteen islands. Each reveals wild, contrasting landscapes made up of immense expanses of dunes, volcanic reliefs and lush valleys. Their immaculate beaches are particularly popular for kitesurfing, windsurfing and diving. Culturally, the destination is steeped in Portuguese traditions associated with its history, but it is also marked by influences linked to its location at the crossing of three continents. The place will captivate you with its colours, warm atmosphere and gentle way of life.
Sal is the northernmost island of Cape Verde. The island owes its name to the saltworks located in the extinct volcano of Pedra de Lume. Most of the island consists of plains, and it has the best-developed infrastructure. Inland, the landscape is arid and desert-like, with very little rainfall. The powerful trade winds that caress the island from November to June also make it a world-renowned Eldorado for lovers of kitesurfing, sailing and windsurfing.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Buggy or quad rideThis trip is available in two formats: 2 hours or 4 hours (on request). The 2-hour trip takes you to the Santa Maria salt lake, framed by a magnificent landscape of dunes and the beautiful Praia do Kite. At the Serra Negra nature reserve, an incredible panorama of the south of the island unfolds before your eyes, and on a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the island of Boa Vista. You then continue through a desert landscape to the oasis of Palha Verde before reaching Ponta Preta, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
- Tour of the islandThis activity takes you on a discovery of the superb natural landscapes of the island of Sal. On the way west, your first stop is Palmeira, an authentic fishing village. Along the coast, you’ll continue on to the natural pools of Buracona on the island’s east coast. These are also known as the “blue eye” because of the turquoise colour of the water. After a refreshing swim, you will head for Terra Boa to appreciate the unusual optical phenomenon of a Fata Morgana. The excursion ends with a visit to the extinct volcano of Pedra de Lume, whose crater is home to salt works.
- Pedra de Lume salt pansVisit the Pedra de Lume salt pans, remnants of the island’s heyday, and you’ll understand how Sal got its name (it means “salt” in Portuguese). Take the opportunity to bathe in the basins in the heart of the crater and let the salt water carry you.
