Senegal
Lush nature, wild animals, bush villages, fine sandy beaches… Senegal is the ideal destination to discover the African continent! With its vast desert areas, such as the impressive Saint-Louis region in the north, its dense forests, mountains and vast coastline, Senegal offers a unique variety of landscapes and ecosystems.
Apart from the postcard motifs, Senegal has an impressive cultural and historical wealth. Some of its monuments, such as the megaliths of Wassu, date back to prehistoric times, while others, such as the Maison Rose in Saint-Louis, date back to colonial times. During your stay, you will also have the opportunity to discover Senegalese cuisine, which is one of the most famous in Africa. Located at the westernmost point of the African continent, almost on the Cape Verde peninsula, the Senegalese capital is characterised by its strong cultural mix and architectural diversity. In this dynamic and rapidly changing city, you will appreciate the authenticity of popular neighbourhoods such as Médina, Yoff or Patte d’Oieie, but Dakar is especially known for its wonderful markets. The Sandaga market, with its splendid New Sudanese-style architecture, is particularly worth a visit, but also the Thilène market, known for its local fruit and witchcraft items. Finally, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can discover the charming and infamous island of Gorée, just a few kilometres from Dakar. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Must-sees of the trip
- Pointe SarèneThe seaside resort of Pointe-Sarène is a little gem and a true oasis of calm. It is no coincidence, as Pointe-Sarène means “Pointe sereine” (calm point) in French. In this paradisiacal place in the shape of a crescent moon, holidaymakers can enjoy a beautiful bay covered by 110 hectares of fine sand. Far away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities, Pointe-Sarène is an ideal destination to recharge your batteries.
- NianingNianing is an authentic fishing village that stretches along a beautiful beach. In addition to fishing, which is the village’s main source of income, the inhabitants also make a living from livestock farming, agriculture, trade and tourism. This oasis of peace is also a small seaside resort with charming hotels that emphasise the culture and tradition of the country.
- SalySaly, a former Portuguese trading post, has benefited from the boom in tourism in Senegal and has become one of the country’s favourite seaside resorts. There is so much to do and see here: Be mesmerised by the paradisiacal landscape and beautiful, palm-fringed beaches or stroll through the streets and stop to discover the small craft shops and typical restaurants and bars. For lovers of authentic culture, excursions to the countryside, e.g. to the M’bour craft market, are a must. The region is also known as a centre for sport fishing and attracts many fans of this discipline every year.
