The Must-sees of the trip
- On board the HANSEATIC natureThe HANSEATIC nature is a state-of-the-art expedition ship that combines style, comfort and adventure at the highest level. Since entering service in 2019, she has been part of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ new expedition class and is specially designed for extraordinary routes to the most remote regions of the world – from the Arctic ice to tropical river deltas.
- Travelling through Freemansund – A gateway to the heart of SvalbardThe HANSEATIC nature glides silently through the narrow, often ice-laden Freemansund, a strait between the islands of Barentsøya and Edgeøya in the southeastern part of the Svalbard archipelago. The scenery is raw, archaic, and majestic. Steep rock cliffs rise sharply into the grey-blue sky, interrupted by snowfields and glaciers slowly calving into the sea. The journey through Freemansund is a highlight of any Arctic expedition. Although the strait is narrow and sheltered, its conditions challenge even modern expedition ships – dense fog banks, drifting ice, and strong currents require precise navigation. On the bridge of the HANSEATIC nature, full concentration is demanded – every manoeuvre is carefully calculated. Onshore, guests spot walruses, polar bears, reindeer or thick-billed murres with binoculars and cameras. The landscape may seem lifeless – yet it is teeming with hidden motion and wildlife. During Zodiac excursions along the rugged coast, the vast silence is broken only by the splash of water and the calls of seabirds. Thanks to her PC6 ice class and an experienced crew, the HANSEATIC nature masters this passage with ease – offering guests a powerful, immersive experience of nature at its most untouched and awe-inspiring.
- Storøya in the far north of the archipelagoThe bow of the HANSEATIC nature points north, toward the wild and icy frontier of the Arctic. After hours of navigating the cold, often fog-shrouded Barents Sea, a lonely, low-lying silhouette appears on the horizon: Storøya – the “Great Island” – located northeast of Nordaustlandet, is one of the most remote and inhospitable islands in the entire Svalbard archipelago. Despite its name, Storøya is small, barren, and largely covered by the Storøyjøkulen, a massive ice cap. Only a narrow coastal strip is free of ice; the rest is a world of glaciers, snowfields, and exposed rock. There are no settlements here, no traces of human life – only wind, ice, and untouched wilderness. If conditions allow, landings are made by Zodiac on the southwest coast. The environment is harsh: drifting ice, swell, sudden weather changes – all characteristic of these northern latitudes. With luck, visitors may spot walruses lounging lazily on gravel beaches – or, with even more luck, a polar bear patrolling the ice, ruler of this cold and silent realm. A visit to Storøya is no ordinary shore excursion – it is an encounter with the outer limits of the habitable world. Here, nature reigns absolute. And for those who reach this remote corner of the Earth, every breath carries the sense of true Arctic wilderness – vast, silent, unforgettable.

Expedition meets comfort

Hanseatic Nature
Norway-Spitsbergen
The HANSEATIC nature is a modern, luxury-class expedition ship – designed for travellers who are looking for something special: intensive nature experiences, exclusive routes and first-class comfort. The ship’s design is bright, open and inspired by nature – perfect for discovering the world up close. On board, you can expect culinary variety, a high-quality spa and fitness area, exciting lectures and a panoramic deck with the characteristic glass balcony overlooking the sea.
Beverlysundet – Between ice and silence
Early in the morning, the HANSEATIC nature sets course for the narrow, remote Beverlysundet, a little-known waterway in the north-east of Nordaustlandet, Spitsbergen’s second largest island. The sound lies hidden between the icy foothills of Wahlenbergbreen and the barren coastline, surrounded by eternal snow, steep cliffs and mirror-smooth water. Beverlysundet is more than just a passage – it is a silent passage through one of the most unspoilt regions of the archipelago. The dimensions seem surreal: rugged mountain slopes rise directly out of the water, occasionally interrupted by tongues of ice that slide calving into the sea. The scenery is like something from another world – timeless, clear, unapproachable.
The Beverlysundet is rarely travelled. It is narrow, often blocked by drift ice and only accessible under ideal conditions. But if the weather is favourable and the ice conditions allow it, guests can experience one of the most impressive stretches of water in Spitsbergen – almost without any trace of human influence. The journey through the sound is slow and careful. Sometimes the ship is completely surrounded by reflective water and icy walls, the echo of seagull calls is lost in the wind. Polar bears are not uncommon here – binoculars always at hand, cameras at the ready. People stand on deck, wrapped up in thick jackets – and are silent. Not out of cold, but out of awe.

Monaco Glacier – The majesty of the north
Deep in the Raudfjord on the north-west coast of Spitsbergen rises a sight of overwhelming beauty: the Monaco Glacier, or Monacobreen, a huge river of ice that pushes its way like a frozen tongue from the interior into the fjord-like coast. The HANSEATIC nature lies quietly at anchor – surrounded by floating chunks of ice, crystal-clear water and an almost silent backdrop.
With an imposing front up to 5 kilometres wide and up to 30 metres high, the glacier looks like a sleeping giant that could awaken at any time. Again and again, a deep rumble can be heard when masses of ice break away and thunderously crash into the water – a so-called “calving” that looks even more impressive in the clear, dry Arctic air.
The glacier was named in honour of Prince Albert I of Monaco, an early polar explorer and supporter of Norwegian Arctic expeditions. This connection between science and nature is still evident today: the Monaco Glacier is an important site for climate research and an impressive example of the dynamics of the Arctic glacier world.
The Zodiac excursions take guests at a respectful distance right up to the edge of the glacier. The ice shimmers in countless shades of blue – from milky white to deep azure. Thick-billed guillemots, kittiwakes and, with luck, polar bears or bearded seals can often be seen on the ice floes along the shores.
Here, at the foot of the Monaco Glacier, the Arctic is just as you would dream it to be: vast, fragile, silent – and unforgettable.

Prins Karls Forland – The long island in the west wind
Prins Karls Forland rises out of the cold Greenland Sea like a narrow, curved ridge – an elongated island to the west of Spitsbergen’s main island. This lonely piece of land stretches over 80 kilometres parallel to the coast of Oscar II Land, separated from the mainland by Forlandsundet. With rugged mountains, vast tundra landscapes and unspoilt coastlines, Prins Karls Forland is one of the most pristine regions of the Svalbard archipelago.
The island was discovered by English whalers in 1610 and named after Prince Charles, who later became King Charles I of England. Today it is part of the Forlandet National Park and is strictly protected – a retreat for animals and a silent witness to the Arctic wilderness.
